I'm a polar bear in a zoo. In captivity. In boredom. I yearn for the wild. Even though I've never experienced it, it's in my memory. I know it by its absence....you want to preserve me here, as a mascot. But honestly, what's the point, when you are destroying what I stand for, what I really am...

He yearns to be wild, but we Wild Ones are dying out, as the ice melts from beneath us. This world that we have loved for generations is ours no more. We may have no monetary value for you humans. But we are creatures of value..... ........imagine a world without animals, only those you farm to eat.... ...is that what you really want? We wild creatures are part of this beautiful planet. Without us, it is dimished.... help us, hear our cry....it is our cry, but it is also yours....we cry to save all that you will destroy and then regret...can you hear us? Can you hear you? Or are we all crying in the wilderness....?

You humans value poetry, but we are poetry too. We are the poetry of the wild parts of the earth. What some of you have done to us saddens us. But some of you we understand---the poets. We understand them, not in our minds, but in our hearts..............since you still value beautiful words, perhaps these beautiful words will make you stop and think---what you are doing to us....to you... What would the world be, once bereft Of wet and of wildness? Let them be left, O let them be left, wildness and wet; Long live the weeds and the wilderness yet. ----Gerard Manley Hopkins, from the poem Inversnaid
